Gutters aren’t something most homeowners think of much until something goes wrong. While a simple concept – a duct that collects rainwater and diverts it away from the home – a gutter requires some attention to make sure that it works correctly.
How often should I clean my gutters?
Generally, to make sure that your gutter works correctly, it’s recommended that gutters are cleaned out twice a year. This can change depending on the location of your home. For example: if you have large trees around your home, you may need to clean your gutters 3 or 4 times in autumn or after a storm with heavy gusts of wind.
What happens if I don’t clean my gutters?
Besides the build-up of leaves and other organic matter, mould and mildew commonly form in areas with moisture and stagnant water. An unfortunate characteristic of mould is that it can spread rapidly and may affect the health of the home’s occupants in the long-term.
A build-up of mould or debris could separate your gutter from the roof making the roofline products redundant. Clogged gutters in winter often lead to “ice dams”, which can block the gutter stopping the flow of water. It can also weigh down the gutter, making it sag and in some cases could cause damage to the roof of your home.
