With their large panes of glass and minimal framing, it’s easy to see why some people believe that bifold doors make a room cold. More glass means more heat escaping from your house and sweeping draughts infiltrating your home…right?

Do bifold doors make rooms colder?
Technology has advanced rapidly in the last few decades, meaning that those old bifold doors that you’re thinking of are hopelessly outdated compared to what is on offer presently. You only have to take a look at current Building Regulations for proof of this. Back in the early 2000s, Building Regulations required windows and doors to have a U-value of 3.1 W/m2K. Today, Regulations specify that a window/door needs to have a U-value of 1.6 W/m2K.
Bifold doors don’t make a room cold – they actually make them warmer!
So, are bifold doors going out of fashion?
There is a narrative out there that the bifold door is becoming unpopular, that they are going out of fashion. Nothing could be further from the truth in our experience.
Advances in double and triple-glazing technology have contributed to bifold doors remaining evergreen in their popularity. At Plan-it Windows, our bifold doors feature a thermal core that is 25% more thermally efficient than traditional aluminium systems. The core features a number of chambers that trap heat and prevent cold air from transferring through the profile and permeating into your home.
Not only has the quality of glazing and thermal efficiency improved, but the design of bifold door frames has improved drastically, too. They are now expertly engineered to outshine their predecessors in every respect.
Our bifold doors feature triple weather sealing on all sash interlocks and continuous weather seals, allowing them to comfortably exceed the UK standard requirements for weather tightness on windows and doors. This combination keeps draughts, the cold, and the erratic Northern weather at bay. It also helps to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home and keep your energy bills low.
So, we can safely say that reports of the death of the bi-fold door has been greatly exaggerated!
