Gutters are a regularly ignored, but incredibly important, part of your home. Dirty gutters can easily ruin the aesthetic of a house, often inviting judging looks from passers-by and can even affect the value of your home. We’ve told you how often you should be cleaning your gutters, but how do you actually clean them?
How do I clean my gutters?
It’s recommended that you invest in a sturdy ladder if you’re going to be cleaning the gutters yourself. Correct ladder safety is important when doing this task. Make sure the ladder is on level ground and someone is holding it to keep you out of harm’s way. Be careful not to use regular power washers when cleaning the gutter, as they may damage it.
A garden hose with a nozzle, or a simple scoop-and-chuck approach using a small spade or your hands, will often get the job done if you regularly clean your gutters. Be sure to check the downpipe for any blockages or debris.
How do I clean my gutters without a ladder?
As previously mentioned, regular power washers can damage your gutter, but several online retailers offer power washers with gutter cleaning extensions. Slowly move the pipe nozzle from one side of the gutter to the other, pushing the debris towards the downpipe. Once you’ve completed this, check that the downpipe is completely free of blockages or debris.
If in doubt, or if you have a multi-storey home, it may be best to leave it to the experts. A quick Google search would give you a list of window and gutter cleaning companies that would be able to help.
